4 Things in Your House that Turn Off Potential Buyers They say love is blind, but we’d argue that familiarity is also a powerful force in making us blissfully ignorant of the less-appealing features of our abodes. To get ready for showings, use our checklist to help you overcome these blind spots. 1. That weird odor We all become desensitized to the scents in our environment. Make sure your home passes the smell test by bringing in a trusted friend for a tour, especially if you’re a smoker, own pets or have experienced moisture issues. 2. Cluttered, crowded spaces Less is more when it comes to house showings. Even if you have already pared down your belongings, we strongly recommend a second round of culling to make the place open, airy and inviting. Clear out:

  • Countertop appliances

  • Personal items and photos

  • Storage spaces, including basements, attics and closets

  • Excess furniture

3. Outdated fixtures and appliances Sure, your 25-year-old appliances are still going like the Energizer bunny. But buyers want move-in ready. Your vintage-era home will make them dread the long list of expensive updates. 4. Lack of natural lighting Good lighting elevates any room in the house. Replace sheer panels and drapes with less obstructive window treatments. Give all windows and screens a good cleaning and keep blinds and shades open for the showing.

Ceiling Trends: Uplift Every Room in the House with These Design-Forward Ceiling Ideas Who says ceilings should dwell in bland anonymity? Play around with one of these innovative approaches to ceiling design, using fresh takes on color, texture and pattern to draw the eye upward.

  • Experiment with paints with a crackle finish. Brick red or deep grays will achieve a classic artisan effect while adding something unexpected.

  • Try a little role reversal: Paper the ceiling in a bold pattern in contrasting color to the walls.

  • Warm up the room with wood. Peel and stick wood planks make it an effortless upgrade.

  • Explore innovations in drop-in ceiling tiles. Say goodbye to the dull Styrofoam look. These come in a multitude of interesting patterns and designs that suit any design aesthetic, from classic to mod.

  • Raise up some decorative wall fretwork to bring texture and patterns to the ceiling.

  • Peel-and-stick murals provide a simple solution for any ceiling upgrade. Thanks to the magic of software editing tools paired with peel-and-stick film printing, you can achieve virtually any design you can dream up.

5 Ways to Display the Stars & Stripes

  1. Install a flagpole bracket off the front porch

  2. Attach a line of flags to a clothesline

  3. Line the walkway with small flags

  4. Drape porch rails or fencing with patriotic bunting

  5. Go big with a vertical statement flag off the side of the house
